Throughout the weekend, members of Ottawa Olde Forge Rug Hooking will be on site sharing live demonstrations, showcasing stunning handcrafted pieces, and speaking with visitors about the rich history and evolving creativity behind this cherished fiber art tradition.
What Is Rug Hooking?
Rug hooking is a traditional fiber art where strips of wool or yarn are pulled through a backing fabric using a specialized hook to create textured loops and intricate designs. Originally, rug hooking developed as a practical and economical way for rural families to repurpose worn household textiles into warm and decorative floor coverings.
Today, rug hooking has evolved into a vibrant artistic medium that embraces both traditional and contemporary styles. Artists create everything from rugs and wall hangings to decorative art pieces, using a wide variety of materials, colours, and techniques to express their creativity.
