Welcoming some new and familiar faces!

September 15th, 2022

We would like to take a moment to formally introduce you to a new member of the team, as well as some familiar faces in fresh new roles!

Matthew Davidson: Digitization Strategy Coordinator

By training, Matthew is a historian. His research primarily concentrates on the history of Haiti and the Caribbean, and on the history of public health, disease, and medicine, but more generally Matthew is committed to encouraging and facilitating historically-informed perspectives on our world. Prior to joining Goulbourn Museum, Matthew worked with the Digital Library of the Caribbean where he supported the digitization of historical and cultural patrimony from various Caribbean countries. Matthew holds an M.A. in History from Trent University and is currently completing a PhD in History at the University of Miami.

Jessica Parsons: Programming Officer

Jessica’s passion for local history began from a young age. Growing up in rural Ottawa, she developed an interest in learning about how people lived and worked in the past and how to preserve and share these stories. This led her to pursue a Hons. BA in History and Canadian Studies from Trent University and a Masters Degree in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. Jessica has worked and volunteered in many museums in Ottawa including the Nepean Museum, the Canadian War Museum, and Watsons Mill. This is where she developed a passion for public programming and education and learning how visitors interact with different programs. She was recently able to implement her passion and skills when developing new educational programming for the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre in Toronto. When she isn’t busy at work, Jessica can be found playing golf (although not very well) or tackling a new puzzle.

Stefan Hiratsuka: Communications Officer

Does Stefan look familiar? You might have seen him before working at the Museum in collections or administration! Stefan holds an Hons. BA from the University of Ottawa with a specialization in history and a minor in classical studies. During that time, he also acquired archaeological experience on excavations in Bulgaria and Romania! Recently, he decided to round out his museum-related skills, and acquired his Applied Museum Studies Diploma from Algonquin College where he graduated with honors. He is a long-time resident of Stittsville and a world traveler, who loves fishing, gardening, and all doggos!

Georgian Parkes: Program Coordinator

Georgian is a student in her final year of undergraduate studies in English and history at the University of Ottawa. While her original intention was to obtain a teaching degree, after working in the Callander Bay Heritage Museum and Gallery she’s been hooked on museums! Helping people learn and making information engaging are some of Georgian’s passions- a perfect fit!

Summer Volunteers Needed

July 22nd, 2022

Goulbourn Museum is seeking volunteers to help with gardening, painting, and general cleaning and tidying this summer. High school students are welcome! Staff will happily sign your forms for volunteer hours.

Gardening:

We have a vegetable garden, a native plant garden, and various flower beds. Would you like to learn about how to garden and grow your own vegetables and native plants? This is a great hands-on opportunity to receive guidance and information.

Already experienced at gardening? We would love your contribution and expertise!

After initial meet-and-greets and instruction, you are free to drop by as your schedule allows. We have all the tools you need and can teach you how to use them.

Painting:

We have several outdoor painting projects that don’t require any skill! Help us spruce up our railings, panels, and doors. We provide all the equipment you need.

General Cleaning and Tidying:

After several years of being closed due to the pandemic, the Museum grounds could use a good summer cleaning. Raking, sweeping, pruning, washing windows, or picking up branches, there’s lots to do! No real skills needed. Just enthusiasm and the joy of seeing immediate results.

How to Get Started:

Fill out this form and we’ll get back to you soon: https://forms.gle/K6af1yjWmMugPuKo8
