Goulbourn Museum Seeking Project Coordinator (Contract)

The Goulbourn Museum is seeking a contract employee to fill the fixed-term contract position of Project Coordinator. The Project Coordinator will help the Museum fulfill its commitment to the World War Commemorations Community Fund. Responsibilities include developing and launching one travelling exhibition, one temporary exhibition, three interactive activities, a WWI themed educational program, a historical presentation, and a commemorative event.

The Project Coordinator will work 37.5 hours per week with some evening, weekend and statutory holiday work required. The fixed-term contract will be for 26 weeks, beginning October 5, 2015 and ending March 31, 2016. The wage for this position is $15.50 per hour. Post-secondary students are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have a background in museum studies, history, project management, social science, education or related discipline and experience working in a museum environment. He/she will be able to accept direction, multi-task and work independently as well as in a team setting.

Candidates require excellent research and writing skills, computer competency, organizational skills, and fluency in the English language. French language skills and knowledge of basic hand tools are assets. There is no public transportation to the Museum site. Goulbourn Museum Seeking Part Time Employee

The Goulbourn Museum is seeking a part time employee to fill the fixed-term contract position of Collections and Programming Administrator (CPA). This is a contract position for Maternity Leave coverage. The CPA will provide excellent customer service; perform collections management duties; assist with programming, special events, research and exhibitions; write articles for the Museum’s newsletters and social media; and, record the minutes at the Board of Directors’ meetings.

The CPA will work 17.5 hours per week primarily on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, although some evening and weekday and statutory holiday work is required. The fixed-term contract could extend up to 54 weeks beginning in mid-November. The wage for this position is $14.00 per hour. Post-secondary students are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have a background in museum studies, history, social science, education or related discipline and experience working in a museum environment. He/she will be able to multi-task and work independently as well as in a team setting. He/she will be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, perform physical labour and be willing to work flexible hours.

Candidates require excellent English language and computer competency skills. French language skills, museum experience and knowledge of basic hand tools an asset. Become a Vendor at our Outdoor Christmas Market

Goulbourn Museum is accepting applications for its Old-Fashioned Christmas & Outdoor Artisan Market. The Market will be held on Sunday, November 22nd from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 2064 Huntley Road. Deadline for applications is September 27, 2015.

We are currently seeking talented vendors selling original handcrafted items to fill 15+ positions in a variety of specialties such as: clothing and accessories (for kids, adults & pets!), bath and body, toys, home décor, Christmas greenery, art, textiles, treats, and baked goods.

In addition to the outdoor market, this annual family event also offers festive Old-Fashioned Christmas activities including a children’s station for writing letters to Santa, Old-Fashioned photos with Santa and charming old-world entertainment.

Note: The artisan market takes place outdoors in an enclosed tent. Vendors will be responsible for dressing appropriately for the cold weather.

HERE’S HOW TO APPLY:

• A short description of your handmade goods
• Contact info and business site(s) (web/blog/facebook/etsy)
• A minimum of 3 quality photographs of your product(s) including 1 photo of your booth set up (Jpeg only, please). If selected as a vendor, your photos may be used at our discretion to advertise the show.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
This is a juried event. Vendors will be chosen carefully to ensure a balanced representation of each category.
Applications will be accepted by email only.
Deadline for applications is September 27, 2015
Only complete applications will be considered.
Acceptance letters will be emailed no later than October 2, 2015 and will include a contract for you to sign and return with payment.

FEES & REQUIREMENTS:
Space rental is $45 and includes one 6’ table and two chairs.
Vendors are required to provide one handmade item valued at a minimum of $10 for a fundraising raffle. Each vendor must provide a table covering to fit the table provided.

If selected, fees must be paid and contract received no later than October 9, 2015.

Please do NOT send payment until you have received a notice of acceptance.

New Exhibit Explores the Origin of Goulbourn’s Street Names

Goulbourn Museum is launching its new exhibit Back to our Routes: The Evolution of Goulbourn’s Streets on June 21st. The exhibit delves into the origin of community and street names in old Goulbourn. “We’ll also be exploring the origin of street names in more recent communities and even areas that are currently under development,” says Tracey Donaldson, Education and Community Programmer.

The Minto Group recently named its first community in Stittsville through a naming contest, a first for both developer and city. They christened this new area Potter’s Key, in honour of Mrs. Ethel May Potter who owned the two-acre lot at 209 Carp Road almost 60 years ago. This story, and the key which is now part of the Museum’s collection, have been incorporated into the the exhibit.

The exhibition will also relay “fun facts” such as when Stittsville got its first street light and the definition of a corduroy road. Artefacts from the Museum’s collection will help narrate the story and bring the exhibit to life.

While it won’t be possible to include every street name, the Museum is hoping to get the public’s help in compiling a comprehensive list after the launch. “If you don’t see your street name, or you know how your street got its name, there will be a file here for you to add that information,” says Donaldson.

The exhibit launch takes place on Sunday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during Father’s Day Flashback. The Museum will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with an old world celebration featuring medieval fights, blacksmith & calligraphy demonstrations, Goulbourn’s Old “27” Fire Truck, food, games, face painting and much more.

You may recognize Mackenzie Birdgenaw, this is his second summer with us as a Curatorial Assistant.  He is one of two students we have hired for the summer.  

“I am a full time student at Carleton University pursuing my undergraduate degree in Canadian Studies. I am also a graduate of the Applied Museum Studies program at Algonquin College. Ultimately, I hope to use my education to assist smaller Indigenous museums in organizing and adequately meeting the needs of their unique ethnographic collections.

My work at the Goulbourn Museum can range from cleaning the shelving units, to tidying up identification tags, or furthering my work with the MINISIS Database which allows the public digital access to the Museum’s collection. I look forward to helping further the care of Goulbourn’s collection and interacting with the community through events such as Doors Open Ottawa and Father’s Day Flashback.”

Volunteers Needed for Doors Open & Father’s Day Flashback

The Goulbourn Museum is looking for volunteers to help at two events in June.

The first event is Doors Open which takes place on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this time staff will be offering tours of the Museum, as well as behind-the-scenes tours of the artefact collection which is housed in the History Centre. We need at least two volunteers each day to dress in period costume and greet visitors. We will provide the costumes but volunteers will need to bring their own lunch.

The second volunteer opportunity is at our Father’s Day Flashback event on Sunday, June 21st. This is a free family event and volunteers are needed to help with set up, take down, and everything in between. Duties could include emptying garbage cans, supervising games, helping at the photo booth, or wearing period costume and greeting visitors. We need three to five volunteers to assist at this event and lunch will be provided (thank you Big D’s!). The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. but help could be needed before and after those hours for set up and take down.

We are happy to provide volunteer hours but, depending on the position, volunteers could be working independently so a certain level of maturity is required (ideally age 16 and up).

Museum needs help with site clean up

We’re seeking the community’s help to get our site in ship shape for the summer season.

The Museum has registered with the Tim Hortons Cleaning the Capital campaign and spiffying up the site will take place on Monday, May 4th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting).

Help will be needed sweeping sidewalks, picking up litter, raking and seeding the lawn, pruning shrubs, prepping garden beds and planting. The Museum will have a supply of plastic gloves but we suggest bringing your own garden gloves if you have them.

Whether you can help for the whole day or just for an hour, all cleanup contributions are welcome. And if students are in need of last minute volunteer hours and have time in their school schedule to lend a hand, staff will gladly sign their forms.
