Gunter Speckmann

Born and raised in a small town in central Germany, Gunter Speckmann was eleven when his town was liberated by U.S. troops known as Hell on Wheels. The strong impression they made lasted through the subsequent Soviet occupation and the creation of the East German communist state. The cage was locked and he and his family were inside it.

At the age of 21, Gunter found a way to break out of that cage and courageously started a new life in the free world.

In West Germany he again encountered members of Hell on Wheels. They suggested he consider life in America. Grasping available opportunities brought him to Canada. Life in Canada was yet another kind of adventure – finding the good life.

Gunter has made his home in Canada since 1958. Now retired from a career in veterinary medicine, he lives in Stittsville, Ontario, with his wife Rosemarie. They have three children and one grandchild.

Gunter still pursues some of his many hobbies, particularly photography, gardening and landscaping. The maintenance of his country property offers the perfect opportunity for physical exercise.

His book, Escape to Paradise (Burnstown Publishing House), is available from the author, Gunter Speckmann, by calling 613-831-2640. The price is $25.00 or $33.00 when shipped. The book is not available in bookstores.
